The £3 National Bus Fare Cap

The £3 National Bus Fare Cap

In a bid to make public transport more affordable and accessible, the UK Government is funding a £3 National Bus Fare Cap on single bus fares across the country. This initiative, which is in place until 31st December 2025, aims to make public transport more accessible and affordable for everyone. By reducing the cost of travel, the government hopes to encourage more people to use buses, thereby reducing traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions. For the residents of Kent, this initiative promises to bring substantial savings and improved connectivity.

The £3 fare cap means that single bus ticket prices on participating operators and routes will not exceed £3. This cap is applicable to all participating bus operators and routes across England.

Operators Participating in the Government scheme in Kent include:

  • 1st Bus Stop

  • Arriva

  • Brighton and Hove

  • Chalkwell

  • Fastrack Kent Thameside - Fares on Fastrack Kent Thameside are currently capped at £2

  • Metrobus

  • Stagecoach

Other Kent operators such as Go-Coach are not part of the scheme but offer comparable fares (Go-Coach operates a £3 flat fare on most routes).
