Bath Street Fastrack Contraflow Bus Lane
About This Scheme
This scheme constructed a contraflow Fastrack bus lane on Bath Street, Gravesend. This formed an important part of the Fastrack strategy for new developments in Gravesham. The scheme aims to improve Fastrack users journey times, making Fastrack more accessible to Gravesend residents and further encourage uptake. It is designed to reduce congestion and improve accessibility through the delivery of a fully integrated sustainable Fastrack network, making sustainable transport a real alternative to the private car, particularly for residents in new developments including Northfleet Embankment East. The new infrastructure was first utilised by Route C2 from July 2024, with Fastrack E starting in November 2024. The scheme was delivered by Kent County Council with funding provided by Ebbsfleet Development Corporation
What Was Improved?
The scheme used under-utilised hatched road space to widen the existing carriageway to incorporate a southbound bus lane. The bus lane has connected West Street to the north and the new Bus Hub on Garrick Street to the south via New Road. Both the existing northbound traffic lanes, plus the existing southbound taxi lane have stayed, with only minor changes to the kerb alignment. As part of the scheme, upgrades were made to the existing crossing to a toucan crossing to improve accessibility for both pedestrians and cyclists.
