Pencester Road Contraflow Bus Lane
About This Scheme
The Pencester Bus priority scheme is part of Kent's Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). Funded by the government, it was chosen for its ability to improve:
the Dover Fastrack bus service
the link to existing bus services in Pencester Road
current bus services in Dover while establishing a new link to the Port of Dover.
The changes implimented were designed to improve the bus network and encourage more people to use buses, helping to make services more sustainable in the future. The scheme:
supportes Dover District Council’s Local Plan and housing developments such as Whitfield Urban Expansion and Connaught Barracks.
improves the journey time and reliability of Dover Fastrack and bus services in Dover
promotes economic growth
maintains a reliable Dover Fastrack network
helps to increase passenger numbers.
What Has Changed?
The scheme has introduced the following changes:
Realignment of the kerbs and pavements at the Worthington Street and Biggin Street junction. This allows buses to cross into Pencester Road.
Installation of traffic lights at the Worthington Street, Biggin Street and Pencester Road junction. The existing controlled crossing on Pencester Road has remained.
Realignment of kerbs and pavements at the southern end of Pencester Road. This allows a two-way vehicle passage. A reduction was made to the existing pavement with installation of a central island to separate the lanes.
Installation of a contraflow bus and cycle lane along the western side of Pencester Road, between Biggin Street and Maison Dieu Road. All existing parking was removed from this side of the road.
Reduction in the existing pavement width. This allows for an uninterrupted bus lane between the parking area entrance behind the shops and the front of Dover Technical College.
Installation of traffic lights at the Pencester Road and Maison Dieu junction. Works included realigment of the kerbs and footpaths on both sides of Pencester Road to allow buses to pass through. The existing controlled pedestrian crossing on A256 Maison Dieu Road has remained.
Installation of a pedestrian crossing on Pencester Road.
The existing southbound bus stops and bus stands have remained. Two bus stops have been installed on the western side of Pencester Road.
